That's called alpha testing.
Believe me: Even the RTM wasn't up to beta-level.
5 machines: On 3 of them explorer.exe crashes and gets restarted on 50% of the logons and about 75% of all logouts...
Consistently reproducible on every build of the last 3 months.
Control-panel applets just crashing, not working or having disappeared.
Windows firewal forgetting rules after a reboot. (Only happens on Deny rules: when I make those I have a damn good reason to do that.)
Windows firewall for ipv6 not working properly at all. Had to turn it of completely to stop it messing with allowed traffic.
Bad drivers for several SATA controllers: Sata reverting to SATA 1 speed. SSD not being detected and background defragging ON on SSD's because of that. In 2 cases even completely failing to detect a, fully functional, harddisk.
The list goes on and on...
I voted for "when the bugs are worked out", but that may be "when hell freezes over".

Hello no! Win7 still does everything and has a FAR better UI. Win10 is like Win8.1 but with even more metro shit. Everything's gone metro (oversized, 2D, low color uglyness for the sake of phones and tablets): the volume control, the wifi/vpn connection panel, the the settings app that replaces some of the control panel, the display settings dialog (which even goes out of its way to hide sceren resolution under "advanced"), an ugly large search bar that takes far too much of the taskbar and can't be resized/moved (and you have to disable cortana, bing search garbage *and* shitty ads-like news), the scrollable start menu imitation (all programs) has far too large text and pointless letters taking up space (scrolls forever), the irritating live tiles are still around, there's too much garbage no one wants of to uninstall/remove (onedrive, ghetto apps and what not). Plus, the mandatory updates whenever-they-want thing (plus having to bother with another extra tool when they botch updates, again). This one can't simply be saved by installing Classic Start Menu. It's far too damaged for that.
That means that Windows becomes a legacy "workstation" OS for me, where I can run the Win32 software that isn't ported yet to another platform and nothing else.

Professionally, I'll see it here and there, but my 'workstation' is a MacBook Pro, and I haven't had to touch a Windows box in months (mostly to set/troubleshoot Puppet on one occasionally) - I mostly hang around Linux. MS Office is as close as I usually come to touching any Microsoft product in my day-to-day work.

I can't stand the new "flat" interface. Its ugly and reminds me of what FVWM looked like in the mid 90s. I can come up with better color schemes and shading and know nothing about graphic or user interface design.

I agree. at some point work will give me a new computer with the newest version of windows on it, but since this won't happen for another 5 years at least I'll be stuck with win 7 until I jump to win 12 or whatever it is. win free at home.

I installed the technical preview into a virtual machine but then I forgot about it and never started the thing for all these months. I'l probably 'upgrade' one of the win7 vm but I'm not in a hurry.
I think I will celebrate the big day in my own way, about time to upgrade KDE 4 to KDE5...

This is Slashdot. Shouldn't the question be "What Percentage of your machines will you be installing Windows 10 on?"
I have machines that already have 8.1 that I will be updating, and machines with Windows 7 and XP that I won't be updating. In particular, my Asus Transformer (Windows Tablet) will be getting Windows 10 first because it's already an 80% touch based machine. (it has a keyboard dock with a touchpad, but is seldom used that way)

... for work i use OS X and Linux. I have a (legit) Win 7 install for games, but as long as that works i see no need to upgrade, free or paid.
I would take advantage of the free upgrade offer only if it allowed me to keep having both Win7 and 10 on the same machine. Otherwise, no thanks.

I am very much in the same situation as you. I use OS X and Linux at work, Linux Mint at home, and I have an (also legit) Win7 install for certain games (although I haven't booted into Windows since December, which tells you how often I actually use it).
I've heard from the tech guys at work that Win10 is going to make their lives a lot easier, and that it's actually looking quite good under the hood, which I do like the sound of.
I might at some point upgrade... but not until there's a pressing need.

Windows 7 works fine and fits my needs, Windows 10 does not. Why switch? So far, the only reason Microsoft has proffered for me to switch is that it makes life easier for Microsoft. Sorry, but there has to be a better reason than that.
Better CMD, better snipping tool, cortana can be usefull sometimes, autocorrect on start (type nopepad and enter), multiple desktop. That on top of the few things that Windows 8 did right. Too little, but why not?

My Vista laptop...still runs Vista. My XP laptop...still runs XP. My Windows 7 desktops and laptops will run Windows 7 until they die. My Windows 8 tablet will also run Windows 8 until it expires.
Nothing good ever comes from "installing" or "upgrading" a Microsoft operating system in place. It's cheaper (especially in terms of time) to just invest in a new machine and use the current operating system - even if it means reinstalling the "Start" button. (Where would we be without "Classic Shell"?)

To be fair, nothing ever good came from buying a PC with ME or Vista... you picked the lesser of two evils. I had 98SE on a machine well into the XP era. I had an XP machine well into the 7 era. Strategic skipping of versions is just as important to a Windows user as not touching the installed system.

I hate to tell you, but Windows 10 runs way better than Vista on the same hardware. While Vista has been mostly stabilized, it still runs dog-slow. Windows 10 is also a natural upgrade to Windows 8, especially if you want to get rid of that godforsaken user interface. Windows 7, however, is best left alone.

While its not terrible, I've Windows 10 to run slower than Vista on my hardware. Granted, its older (3ghz Xeon quad-core with 4GB of DDR2), but the machine was quite responsive under Vista. Under 10 it runs fine, but will start to slow down with far fewer apps open compared to Vista.
Still, I like the system better and will likely continue to use it until I upgrade that machine (which won't be that long anyways).

You're living in a fantasy world. An in-place upgrade might not work out well (though honestly, that's mostly something that was true back in the Windows 98 days that people just still cling to), but if you get a machine with a Windows OS already on it the FIRST thing you should do if you have media is to wipe it clean and reinstall it. Manufacturer's bloatware is terrible.

...over which updates are installed and when, then I'll consider upgrading the gaming machine. Forcing auto-update is probably ok for grandma, but I'm an IT professional that actively maintains my machines and as such I do not want to give up that control.
Pretty sure the answer to that will be to set up and run your own Active Directory domain, and you'll be able to control everything as you like. That seems to be MS's solution to any desire to control the desktop: "Go into Active Directory and make the needed changes for what you want to control."

I've been running it since November and I love it. It was really flaky at first, especially with audio and video playing issues, but that's all been smoothed out and it's running great, faster than Windows 7 even, on my 6 year old desktop machine. And it worked fine and automatically installed all the drivers on my fairly new work laptop.

I haven't used it but reading down the feature list I see that Media Center is being deprecated in favour of a limited feature expansion of WMP. No thank you. I prefer MC on my big screen. You can keep Windows 10, in fact you can find a dark crevice and jam that fucker in good and tight.

My "hate" is purely based on my experience with Windows 8, and the fact that Windows 7 works really well for me. I don't see any pros in updating to 10, and there's a real risk that it'll suck as bad as 8 and it will be a pain to downgrade back to 7).

I now use Manjaro Linux as my primary OS, and I keep Windows 7 on a second drive to dual-boot, because muh gaymes. But once they release The Witcher 3 for Linux I probably won't even need the Windows partition for the next several months.

Install Classic Shell and forget the rest. You can turn off a lot of stuff in the WIndows Features section. Even OneDrive can be disabled. The classic games from Win 7 are available to install as freeware. Probably illegal but better than the X-Box suckage.

Yea, that's my concern as well. Similar problems. I have a Sony Handycam that only works with XP. It works just fine on its own, records without a problem but I can't download the video. Same with an HP Scanner. HP doesn't write drivers for it. It works fine on my XP box but not on Windows 7.
I have Rocksmith and all the downloadable content for it. I don't want to move to 10 only to find out the game doesn't work as well or doesn't work at all.

What will W10 bring? hard to say. It's already forged huge steps into touch/pen computing and tablet/pc crossover. They say if you are using a high density monitor - as seems to be more common - that you will benefit from proper or, at least, better UI scaling.

Most annoying is that there is almost no differentiation between active and inactive windows. By default, active windows have a slight suggestion of a blue glow around the edge and ever so slightly darker text and markers in the title bar. I didn't notice it on my test machines because they aren't my day-to-day computers with 3+ monitors and tons of stuff running. Now that I've got stuff spread out on my laptop with two external monitors, it really stands out.
Second most annoying is that I've got 10 Win7/Win8/Win10 machines and the only one that was ready to install this morning was my main laptop. I really didn't want to use that as my test system but I also didn't want to wait who knows how long until one of my 4 Win7/Win8 disposables is allowed to update.
Third most annoying is that one of my older computers had an old Nvidia card and The Report says Win10 can't be installed because there are no Win10 drivers for that card. So I took the card out and it still says Win10 can't be installed because there are no drivers for the card that I took out. I found instructions for forcing a recheck which says it could take as long as 15 minutes to re-scan the computer. That was 5 hours ago. The timestamp on the report is unchanged. I guess I just have to wait until it decides to scan again on its own.
Fourth is that the update icon disappeared from one of my Windows 8.1 with Bing devices. It was there a few hours ago but not ready to update. Then it was gone.
So I've got one complaint about the product and 3 complaints about how it's being rolled out.

I spent a good part of my working life picking up behind MS products, started with Windows 3.11 in 1991, and ended up on Windows 7 in 2010.. Since I've retired, I've moved all of my home systems over to Linux. I began using Linux off/on back in 1995 with Slackware, and finished my career admining a 100 server Linux cluster, plus ~300 windows boxes. I quit Windows a long time ago. If/when I feel like I really *need* to use WIndows, I just fire up a virtual machine with XP, XP 64 bit, or Win7. I haven't even considered using anything else in a VM. For my purposes, those three OS's are almost identical, except that XP is a little less secure. Oh - and the fact that you can't get support for it anymore.
I'm not real sure about XP-64. I'm told that the Win2K3 family is EOL'd, but I know that three weeks ago, I was able to get updates for my fresh insta

Devil's advocate (regarding what's found in the soylentnews comment) : storing web history etc. on the cloud is by definition what you do when sync'ing such browser state to access it later or on other devices.
Recovery feature for Bitlocker seems useful : expect a lot of people to lose track of their key, rendering their own data impossible to access. Surely that can be disabled? (right...)

Core 2 Quad (be called Xeon or not) is a pretty power hungry CPU, a Celeron G1840 + new motherboard + one stick of 4GB ddr3 is much better (multithreaded performance of a Q6600, vastly higher single thread performance, vastly lower power use, built-in recent graphics)
Or Athlon 64 is fine. XP and linux make such a strong enough single core CPU fly. Why the hell browse with XP, though?
Linux Mint 17.x Mate will fly on that old computer. You just lose vast software compatibility that comes with XP.

My personal answer will be when the vendors supplying the applications I use have vetted and cleared Win10 for use, systems have been upgraded, application have been tested together, the image has been created, and we have been given needed resources to make the desktop install/upgrades and do user training (which will usually show that Win7 is holding the enterprise back somehow, so I guess, technically "when forced to" is sort of the proper answer).

I have many MacOS X and Linux/Android devices, and one two Windows PCs (for running a few games). With Mac OS X I upgrade immediately because it's what I work on all the time and benefit from features. The PCs exist to run Minecraft and Steam, so the OS doesn't much better. But if Windows 10 is more efficient and stable than what I'm running now, I guess I'll update.

Windows is like the 1st car I owned for 15 years but rarely leaves the garage anymore because it's been replaced by other vehicles and lifestyle changes.
At work, I use a Mac laptop with a Linux VM for development.

Years ago Windows 95 was replaced with Slackware. Though I have had occasions to install Windows since then, they do not last more than a month. Limited specific uses. Other than an iBook and and Mac Mini, it has been Linux (and other *nix) since 1995.

Why the hell do you need Windows Pro? There is no point unless you are doing things on a corporate network. You sure as hell don't need Pro to run games. Home editions can be had for $80-$90.
