Notacon: Because Your Brain Has A Right Side, Too

I actually kind of like Cleveland. I don't know why the city gets such a bad rap these days. It's not perfect, but it certainly has a number of things going for it in relation to a conference such as:

1) Being central to many other major cities
2) Lower costs of living (which I would assume would translate to lower conference costs... maybe not)
3) Having a decent amount of stuff to do

Eh, it should be an interesting event. Are you going to be there?

Opte.org @ Notacon...

I will be representing the Opte.org Internet Mapping project at this years Notacon conference. We will have neat pictures, movies, 3d animations, t-shirts, and various other swag to give away. Ohh ya.. And Source code! We do hope to have the source code for the Opte project released sometime around then (maybe before, maybe at the conference). Hope to see you all there!

Thank $Deity for a tech conference that is NOT on the west coast somewhere! Money that would have gone to plane tickets, hotels, cars, conference passes, beer, etc. can now be better spent on conference passes, beer, hookers, etc.

On second thought a hooker from Cleveland might be a bad idea.

I do like the idea of being able to drive to the thing though. Thanks for not ignoring east coast and midwestern geeks, notacon!

Well, let's just say that while we like heading to the west coast, too, for variosu conferences and events, we know that this area has a *lot* to offer. The problem is that most of us really don't know each other. Hopefully this event can fix that and at the same time explore new territory not covered at those other conferences.

Considering that nobody else in Cleveland is trying to attract the attention of high-tech companies to the area, this conference could be a Very Good Thing for northeast Ohio if it catches on.

Really, the worst thing Cleveland has going for it when it comes to attracting high-tech is the horrible weather. Freezing cold in winter, roasting like a sauna in summer. But the cost of living is tiny compared to SoCal - I'd say the average rent on a 2-bedroom in the first-ring suburbs is sub-$1000.

Actually, my rent for a two-bedroom half of a house is well below that (plus utilities). It's one of the reasons that, while I may want to fly the coop sometimes, there are a lot of good reasons to stay that many people really don't consider. Overall it's really not too bad. The people are cool at least ;)

I moved from LA to Germany, and I can say pretty much that Cleveland sounds a lot like Germany.

This is the one being hosted by the guys behind Rubi-con, right? I've thought about going in the past, but was too busy and such. Might go this year, as it's a bit closer than Detroit.

btw, how was last year's Rubi-con? I can't find any writeups or anything. Did the cops get called again? Were there feds? Inquiring minds want to know :)

Kind of, but not really.

It's put on by long time Rubi attendee's that are dissappointed by the probable discontinuance of rubi-con.

Last years rubi was rather well behaved. No cops, no feds that annouced themselves. Was still lots of fun.

To each his own. As was stated by the noble AC, we're trying to attract a somewhat different crowd. Yes, CanSecWest is an excellent conference and I would suggest it to anyone who can afford it.

By the looks at it, CanSecWest costs at a minimum CAN$1600 whereas this conference can be had for as low as US$50.

Too bad you posted as AC, but you probably expected this reply anyway :)

To plug a con is one thing, but to make rude comments against something you have not seen is another. It just shows your obvious lack of intelligence in the matter. Cansecwest is a good conference full of great speakers, however 1600$CAD (1,200 USA) is an extremely high price for most of us students of life. If you have a big corporation to sponsor your attendance to Cansecwest, go for it! However, I unfortunately do not have that luxury and neither do a lot of people currently working/struggling in the tec
