GovTechGuy writes "A senate aide says this session is their best shot at passing the Carper-Bennett data breach notification bill, which would require any organization holding consumers' personal information to notify them in a timely manner if that data is breached. The bill doesn't add any new regulatory penalties for failure to comply, but it does make sense of the patchwork system of state laws aimed at protecting consumers from identity theft."
