MrSeb writes "If you've been following Linux news lately, you know that on November 14, Mint 12 RC1 was released. This isn't the final version (which is due at the end of November), but it's unlikely that anything significant will change in the next couple of weeks. The most important aspect of Mint 12 is that it includes GNOME 3.2 as opposed to Unity Desktop, which is used by Ubuntu 11.10, the Linux distribution that Mint 12 is based on. Instead of just shipping with GNOME 3.2, though, it also includes MGSE (Mint GNOME Shell Extensions), allowing for users to create a GNOME 2-like environment. This change was brought on for a couple reasons; GNOME 3 is considered slow, buggy and non-intuitive by many users and Unity's popularity is not much better. In this fashion it seems Mint is looking to please everyone; Ubuntu deserters, GNOME 3 haters and old school GNOME 2 power users. As a whole, Mint 12 doesn't feel very different than version 11 — the addition of GNOME 3 and MGSE is, of course, large, but overall the feeling is that RC1 is intended to sit out there directly against Ubuntu 11.10 and Unity, waving the flag of complete customization. In this regard it'll make both Mint 11 and disgruntled Ubuntu users alike happy."
