crookedvulture writes: Western Digital has released a new 10k-RPM VelociRaptor hard drive with an even terabyte of storage capacity. The high-performance desktop drive is priced to compete with SSDs, but it doesn't have the performance to keep up, making dinosaur comparisons unavoidable. The new VelociRaptor does have four times the storage capacity of solid-state drives in the same price range. At times its performance is orders of magnitude lower, though, and the drive is rather noisy when seeking. This looks like a good option for users that need fast access to large datasets, but the potential for high-performance mechanical drives seems otherwise bleak given the low price of modern SSDs.
