Marcy writes "Microsoft has just announced the final release of the IIS FastCGI module for IIS 5.1 (XP), 6 (2003), and 7 (2008). This FastCGI module was built with collaboration from Zend (creators of PHP) and intended to solve the CGI on Windows problem. Now the only question is, is this to stop people from switching to *nix servers or to make Windows sysadmins' lives a lot easier?"

  • I am reassured... Actually, I guess suEXEC doesn't work with PHP anyway, so the Windows version probably won't be a whole lot worse than running it in apache with one user for every PHP site on the entire server.

Portability-wise, surely a lot of stuff that depends on modules that depend on specific libraries is going to break. I'll be interested to see how many large PHP apps work when dropped wholesale into this environment.
