DangerTenor asks: "The United States Government is standing up a Bridge Certificate Authority to enable PKI Interoperability between different agencies (gov't and non-gov't). The PKI currently relies on the use of either meta-directory products or X.500 DSP Chaining in order to pass certificates and CRLs between directories. OpenLDAP doesn't fit the bill because it doesn't support chaining. Does anyone know of open source projects focused on full X.500 directory implementation, or on meta-directory capabilities?"

tooTired asks: "At my company the owner is heavily implying that the development staff needs to start working longer hours and weekends to shorten the time-frames on our current projects. The exact quote is 'These 8 hour days have to stop, we need to be working 15 hours a day and weekends, balls to the wall.' We are heavily under-staffed even with my multiple attempts to show the owner that we need more resources. My general feeling is that long hours is generally a symptom of poor project management, and not something to be sought after. I wanted to ask the Slashdot community their opinions on how working long hours during the week and weekends affects the quality of the code they produce, and the overall success of the project." A large reason why many in this industry find themselves working long hours and weekends is that management makes unreasonable expectations and deadlines. Are there ways of communicating to management that long hours to rush a project to completion is not the way to complete a successful project? "Five years ago, almost to the day," Ross declares, "Microsoft shipped IE4 with a JVM that was intentionally engineered to provide leverage to corrupt and pollute Java compatibility standards." According to an Associated Press report, Microsoft Corp has until only October 4 to respond to Sun Microsystems' request for a federal court injunction requiring Microsoft to integrate Java into Windows."

Don Box, an architect in Microsoft Corp.'s developer division told an audience of Web services conference attendees Wednesday: 'The end of the XML Web services era is near. I predict two years from now we won't have this conference.'"

Assay also details how its terms inhibit and foster innovation, and why we should care. In this next generation of software, those who understand 'copyleft' licenses like the GPL will have the upper-hand, and will be best positioned to take on closed-source shops like Microsoft. Assay wrote this paper while attending Stanford Law School, where he studied the the GNU General Public License under Professor Larry Lessig." A thoughtful piece that answers - as well as they can be answered - a lot of the questions about the GPL that we get for Ask Slashdot, as well as examining the economics of it. Good reading for anyone developing or selling software.

Lost Canadian Abroad asks: "As a software developer I have always found it strange that large companies are willing to spend obscene amounts of money for software development. Until recently I have shrugged it off as 'the cost of doing business', but something happened not long ago that has caused me to start questioning that practice. The more I talk about it with other people, who are business people themselves, the more irritated I get about the whole thing. Why is it that if you're not charging a company tens of thousands of dollars for a development project that you're not taken seriously?" I've always wondered about this, myself. This practice seems to contradict common sense. Is it that higher prices imply a certain degree of quality and/or assurance to managers? Do you think that businesses might be better off if they took a risk and tried the lower end of the costs spectrum?

Tim talks about the new generation of level editing in Doom3, his favorite maps of all time, how designers and coders work together, and many other subjects. One of the most interesting parts of the interview was this question: 'PlanetQuake3: Will it be possible to adjust the speed of the game for between single player and multiplayer play?' 'Tim Willits: Yes, most of the game logic is outside the main executable, this gives us great flexibility in changing basic game parameters between single and multiplayer.'"

Genady asks: "Maybe I'm getting old. I've been looking around lately at all the little scripts I've created to watch log files, drive space, web pages, general SysAdmin stuff really. It's really a mis-mash of stuff I've written and aquired over the years. I've used the higher end enterprise management frameworks, as well as lower end apps like NetSaint. My problem with these has always been lack of intelligence. Does anyone know of a project to do monitoring/alerting coupled with some artificial intelligence that can learn that I don't care about particular servers after a certain time of day?"

Squidgee writes "This is the site for "LIAP: Linux In A Pillbox". It is an interesting recovery distro made in the vein of pharmaceuticals; each floppy based 'minidistro' cures one specific Linux ailment. Or, as Luke Komasta (The creator of LIAP) puts it: "My Linux project contains "pills". Each of them is good for one disease, but it doesn't work good enough for another. When you know what you need a Linux for, you may choose a good pill. And of course, as you know, there is no drug which is good for treating all diseases." It's an extremely interesting approach to Linux recovery, and one that appears to be more effective than the other varieties of floppy/mini-cd based recovery systems. Worth downloading in case you ever need it!"

It'll be compatible with both .NET and Java, and is aimed at developers who don't want to be cornered into using Microsoft's entire suite of programs. I personally am very nostalgic for Borland's old DOS-based IDE, and I'll be watching for this in the future."
