It's their casual designation of the neutral word "slave" as a painful one, that actually makes it a painful word. Keep telling people that the word "slave" should never be used because racism, and people (of color) will start to feel bad whenever the word comes up. Moreover, they will start to hate whomever (unwittingly) uses that word in normal conversation. And at the same time you're pissing off everyone else.
By purging these words from normal language, you're fomenting hate, not solving racism.

Except it doesn't. The slave component is not equivalent to the master component but in an inferior position. Neither component works without the other. Slavery is a condition in which a person subjugates a person. A slave peripheral is either meaningless without the master, or in the case where you have a slave and master storage device connected to the same bus, it's simply giving precedence to the master device

If I'm not mistaken, "Niger" comes from Latin for "Black" and the number of consonants were variable before dictionaries were established and spelling preferences were defined. This doesn't have anything to do with the Dutch or Nigeria other than the name had the same source: Latin for "Black".
In that light it's notable that regardless of the number of consonants one applies or which word one uses, whether or not a word is "racist" depends upon whether a perceived race has been used to perhaps inaccurately stereotype a person or group of persons, a culture, a place or so forth. The notion of "racism" is not this abstraction itself but rather inappropriate application of subjective stereotyping and generalizations.
With that said... The change to OpenZFS has little or nothing to do with racism, and
