First Multivendor Embedded Linux Standard Nears 10

An anonymous reader writes "The Embedded Linux Consortium's board of directors has started the clock on final review of version 1.0 of the ELC Platform Specification, according to an announcement sent to the ELC's members. The draft spec was completed by the platform spec working group in late October, triggering a 45-day review period that will culminate in a vote cycle authorizing public distribution of the world's first Embedded Linux standard."

The last time some friends got together for a lan party they had these cheesy penguin pins. One of them slipped and smacked his head on the floor, the pin was embedded in his cheek. Is that what this is all about? He's not suing me is he?
  • Whoa there. Okay, I might be clueless, but-- who are these guys? Are they Blessed by Linus? (Alternatively, are they Blessed by any of the big Linux-friendly firms like Intel, IBM, etc.?)

I wonder if there is a "short list" somewhere of all the biggest and most important Linux "consortiums" (consortia?), standardization projects, documentation projects, etc.? Ideally, listing which ones are and aren't Linus-Blessed, and which companies back/support each one?

I really hate to say it, but sometimes the decentralized (yeah, Linus calls the shots in the kernel, but come on, that's not all there is to it) nature of the Linux community can lead to this sort of confusion...

    Anyone got a list?

...maybe the board of directors [embedded-linux.org] gives you some hints? :)

      • Inder Singh, Chairman and CEO, LynuxWorks (Board Chairman and ELC President
      • Dan Bandera, Program Director, Emerging Device Standards & Strategy, IBM Pervasive Computing (Board Vice Chairman)
      • James Ready, CEO, MontaVista Software (Board Treasurer)
      • Michael Tiemann, Chief Techology Officer, Red Hat Inc. (Member of the Board)
      • Young Joo Kim, Vice President, Samsung Electronics (Member of the Board)
      • Greg Wright, T/A AAA Computers (Board Vice President)
      • Victor Yodaiken, Finite State Machine Labs (Member of the Board)
...these guys are just the board for the 124 member companies. So yes, it is an important consortium with significance on where embedded linux is steered.

I've worked with several companies in the embedded field (including medical and automotive applications.) Standardisation is something that would help a lot of companies in this field, particularly if it reduces the uncertainty over embedded device support (e.g. non-PC serial port UARTs, LCD panel support, etc.).

I hope one of the first things they look at is a standard for kernel modularisation that improves on the current kernel config scripts. Configuration management of an embedded linux system is very poor compared to, e.g. eCOS.
