FreeLinuxCD.org Looking For New Leader 8

GigsVT writes "Oktay Altunergil, Founder of FreeLinuxCD.org has posted the following: "It looks like I will not be able to continue the Free Linux [CD] Project any more, at least not in the foreseable future. Currently I have absolutely no time to put into the project because of other responsibilities. At this point, I am looking to pass the torch to somebody else, before the project dies alltogether." At its peak, freelinuxcd.org had several international chapters dedicated to sending out donated Linux discs for free. It would be a shame to see it go."

FreeLinuxCD.org Looking For New Leader

  • I'm not sure what there is to be continued since it was one guy giving people free linux CDs. If some other guy wants to do it, I'm sure they can do it, even though he has the fancy domain name. There are certainly plenty of other people giving away cds. Maybe he should donate the domain name to one of the other groups. http://www.roseindia.net/linux/freelinuxcd.htm http://linux.fotter.com/ http://www.linuxtrader.com/
  • It's interesting that there are all these other International sites. Did the CDs that supplied these sites come out of his pocket as well? This does cast a wider responsibility for the domain name I suppose.

  • I guess I don't understand the utility of distributing old Linux CDs. I have more of them than I can count, going back to the first Infomagic 'Unix' CD and the first Yggdrasil (both of which are now collectors items) but I fail to see the utility in distributing Red Hat 4.2 CD sets. I would imagine there are 'interests' out there who would be delighted to know which computers have an old version of Linux installed on them. Heck, there are folks who'd gladly donate their 'phone home Linux' distro complete
  • If ever I saw a domain crying out for that status it's this. As a non-profit it could get backing by real big Linux companies and even bigger ones such as SUN and HP. Not to mention the Educational grants from various public and private foundations supporting the advancement of learning.

Why is this story hidden in "Developers"? This has nothing to do with development, it's a charity trying to evangelize Linux by sharing otherwise unused CDs among those who can't afford to buy them (or don't have a high-speed internet connection to download ISOs). This belongs on the front page.
