who read the first words of the title and immediately thought "Free Aibo", as in "Free Willy"? I had horrific visions of liberated Aibos running wild thru the woods, attacking all manner of wildlife, then sneaking back into the city under the cover of darkness to steal a battery charge.

Experience with Robot and Biological dogs?

I am interesting in getting an AIBO, and my girlfriend wants a "real" dog. Does anyone have any experience with a bio-dog and a robo-dog living together? I know this sounds silly (I'm smirking as I type) but I am serious about this. Also, does anyone leave their AIBO to roam free while they are out? I'm curious what the physical/mental impact of this on the AIBO.

Actually... I dunno about the other Aibos, but the ERS 220 doesn't do much on its own. We have four of them for Urban Search and Rescue, and until you program them, they just dance some and look cute.

There's this dog [cmu.edu] who hangs around the RI [cmu.edu] a lot. Last time we checked, he's still a little afraid of the AIBO when it marches around. He's a lot bigger than the first time they met, though, and less timid I think. He was nipping a bit at the AIBO's tail by the time we decided to seperate them.

Here's something for you to consider. A new AIBO is a $1300 instrument with lots of mechanical parts that keeps low to the ground. Even if your real dog doesn't decide to eat it, you're going to have to worry about hai

This could be a lead to general porpose robots. Much like PCs are with computers. So after a while you can get different application for robots.

For those of you who have a 210 or 220, some guys at CMU have made a framework for programming the aibo that is much easier to use than OPEN-R. The website is at www.tekkotsu.org [tekkotsu.org]
We are using it to program the dogs to perform urban search and rescue, and we have been very happy with Tekkotsu in general. Its worth checking out if you want to start programming the aibos quickly and still have power to do what you want.
