China's Ministry of IT Picks Gitee To Build 'Independent, Open-source Code Hosting Platform' for the Country As Tension With the U.S. Escalates (techcrunch.com) 36

Rita Liao, reporting for TechCrunch: The technological decoupling between the U.S. and China has been a boon to Chinese firms -- from chipmakers for smartphones and electric vehicles through to software -- that are the backbones of millions of businesses' daily operations. Chinese companies might have established a firm grip on internet services for consumers, but many fundamental technologies undergirding hardware and enterprise software remain in the hands of Western companies. As tech businesses become increasingly entangled in broader geopolitical disputes, their users and clients are feeling the heat. Another area that has made the tech community restless is source code hosting. Chinese developers rely heavily on GitHub, as evident from an apparent government ban of the site in 2013 that prompted former Google China head Kai-Fu Lee to speak out. Now the China developer community is wary that political conflict may inflict GitHub.

[...] Seven-year-old Gitee is at the center of China's push to localize businesses' source codes. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), one of China's top tech policymakers, recently picked (in Chinese) Gitee to construct an "independent, open-source code hosting platform for China." The project will be carried out by a consortium led by Open Source China, the Shenzhen-based firm behind its namesake open-source community and Gitee. The hosting service appears to be a government-led effort with support from research universities and participation from the private sector -- a group of 10 organizations including Huawei, which is itself suffering from supply chain disruption amid the political storm.

/. is hardly a cohesive group - nerds are fundamentally the bleeding edge of intellect and therefore cover the most broad philosophical spectrums of any demographic. Add in the fact 90% of the content on the site isn't "news for nerds" (or even "stuff that matters") and suggesting some subset of /.'ers saying things one day is indicative of a different subset of /.'ers saying things another day is kind of out there.

I kinda vomited a little when I read that. Nerds are so far from that description, it makes me laugh....and I am as nerdy as most on this site.

They like to *promote* that they are, but no, they are not. Bleeding edge of functional autism... perhaps.

Pretty poor start to the conversation, but I will (charitably) guess you [Slonak Nana] felt you had to be so brief because of the fundamental problem with FP abuse.

However I'm not familiar with your context, so I'm guessing that "clone" is a specific project on github and you think it can do what the Chinese need (at least insofar as it was described in the summary). Care to clarify? (Not restricted to the OP, by the way.) And yes, I searched on github and did find a large number of repositories named "clon

Care to clarify? (Not restricted to the OP, by the way.) And yes, I searched on github and did find a large number of repositories named "clone" or including "clone", but none of them that seem relevant to this story.

However my main response is that your general solution approach is no good and that the Chinese would have to be crazy to seriously consider it. These days they are already having too many "reliability" problems with supposedly international infrastructure and they have the critical mass to build their own infrastructure just for China. I do think they would be willing to use an international platform and that they would even like the long-term marketing prospects from using international platforms, but certainly not if it's a "Heads America wins, tails China loses" proposition.

Much more plausible would be to create their own dog food, which seems to be the thrust of this story, and hope that they can make it so tasty that eventually all the mice in the world will start beating a path to their door in hopes of sharing in the dog food. No, I'm not going for Funny moderation, but I tend to mix and mangle my metaphors and similes. Badly.

I'm actually more interested in speculations about a political response from China to the political problems created by Trump. I'm not sure it would have been possible to negotiate economic solutions to the problems, but it's obvious that Trump can't negotiate anything with anyone. My premise is that the Chinese crimes were primarily economic and related to playing the "capitalist" game too hard for our taste, but of course you should disagree if you think it's primarily a political problem. However, if the Chinese do decide on a political response, then Trump is the obvious target and they have some major economic weapons with which they could do enormous economic AND political damage.

The real threat is Xi's possible decision to consolidate more losses under the bad year of Covid-19. An extremely bad year, even for the few countries that have managed to contain the disease, but China has other losses that have to be written off the books at some point, so why not now, when those losses will be nearly invisible because of the Covid-19 red ink?

Me? I just want to get completely out of the stock market. If I were a gambling man, I'd be speculating on a huge dip in October driven by Chinese gamesters (with Chinese insiders profiting on the flip side).

One more thing linking back to the main story here. I would also wager that the Chinese internal market is above critical mass now. They have a large middle class and a large service economy and can largely transition out of manufacturing even if Trump throws his YUGEST tantrums at them.

You said you were sure about the context here is probably because my comment wasn't target at you; but to the target audience /. readers who works with open source repositories.

I am referring to git ; the open source repositories and behaviour of git commands; and if you want to know more open source repositories; you can start with https://git-scm.com/docs/git-clone [git-scm.com] ; You will get the context; what's the meaning of git clone, upstream and forks as people can clone, upstream to this newly repository, and

Doing a massive clone is probably a reasonable thing. Who knows when the next tantrum will hit, or what it's target will be? Be prepared.

The problem is keeping things in sync. I don't know how many projects currently have sufficient Chinese contributors to maintain them, but I would guess not many. My guess would be there were some projects that had lots of Chinese contributors, and many projects that had few. This is because of language problems. (Just *try* to keep current on Ruby without being flue

        • Thanks for confirming what a sloppy writer you are, but now I think you are delusional and most likely some sort of troll. Probably a Bitcoin gold miner, too, which is a special form of insanity, but maybe you just want to change the topic as a diversion. We can probably save a lot of time here if you just clearly express your support of Trump so that I can dismiss you as ignorant or stupid or paid to fake it (and I don't care which). And I think my initial reaction was much too charitable.

What's so poor about it? When making a point, brevity is a virtue, not a vice. You should try it sometime.

I've never been a programmer in my life, but even I know what "git clone" means. If you wanted clarification, you could have taken a few seconds to perform a simple search [google.com] to "git" all the information and context you need.

However my main response is that your general solution approach is no good and that the Chinese would have to be crazy to seriously consider it.

How can you possibly say his "general solution approach" is no good, when you admit you don't even understand it?

Git is open source and there are already many other sites similar to GitHub, such as Git Lab.

At some point you have to say this Pavlovian reaction to the Chinese where people just assume it's a stolen knock off is racist.

'Chinese' is not a race. Though the CCP would like it to be so they can scream 'racist' at anyone who criticises them. Also they are well on their way to erasing/ethnically cleansing/assimilating the non-Han Chinese who they regard as anything from 'suspect' to 'sub human'.

Don't buy into the CCP 'criticism of us is racist' agenda.

          'Chinese' is not a race.

No, but "Han" is one of the largest ethnic groups in the world and is what one thinks of when one thinks "Chinese". Part of what China has been doing with the Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in China is to essentially "Hanify" them.

          • No, but "Han" is one of the largest ethnic groups in the world and is what one thinks of when one thinks "Chinese".

Not in the US. The vast majority of people in America wouldn't be able to answer "who are the Han" if their life depended on it.

            • by HiThere ( 15173 )

Sure I would. The Han are the enemies of Buck Rodgers. (Well, at least of Anthony Rodger, the original version.) I think they were also the villains in Heinlein's "Fifth Column".
