Oh? Inefficient in what way? (time? space? programmer time?) What has the largeness of a program got to with efficiency?

If something *has* to be inefficient, then I want it to be processor inefficient. My CPU cycles are probably the cheapest part of all the computing that I do. Python is an extremely useful tool for me, despite the fact that it's slower than C++ or C. When I need to write a utility, I want to write it quickly, and I don't really care if it runs relatively slowly.

too slow? tell that to our 50,000 line program. Think again, only 1% of your code needs speed and that's easy to optimize by making a small C/C++ library only when a profiler determines it is necessary.

While I never spent much time looking at the slides, Beazley's book "Python Essential Refference" is definately one of the best dead-tree computro books I've used. In a sense, it's comparable to K It's well written consise and always within reach. It's an indispensable reference guide (hence the name), but not a great book to learn from, as none of the examples actually do anything.

Well, you can always get it from Amazon [slashdot.org]. If you pick it up from somebody else, make -sure- to get the 2nd edition, it was updated to cover Python 2.1.
