Nature is a far more complex and non-discrete system than that. Seasons depend on latitude and altitude, prevailing currents in air and water, and a host of other factors. In some places there are four, in others two, and in still others three. They change gradually, one blending into another, not switching over with the tick of a clock or flip of a desk calendar. The idea that Fall/Autumn just began today (or was it last night?) seems peculiar (and a bit pedantically pointless), because the weather here was distinctly chilly already last week, the leaves are already turning, and the beaches were already pretty much deserted. South of here, Autumn may yet be on its way.
Equinox is a point in time, an event. But the advent of Autumn (or any other season) is a process. Where I live it happens through most of September, and the other seasons (we have four) likewise make their way bit by bit: a wintry night might be followed by a spring-like day, another wintry night, a wintry day, and so on, until the nights are spring-like and the spring days are uninterrupted. This is how a human experiences seasons, not by government or astronomical fiat.

I find that as I get older I have less and less patience to deal with being out in the heat.

This is really insightful, since we tend to anticipate the upcoming season. The only exception I think would be in Fall, when I don't think any more people would pick Winter. People don't tend to look forward to Winter unless they do year-round.
