Ximian for HP-UX 28

PenguinX writes: "It seems that the folks out at Ximian and HP have delivered on the promise to make Ximian Gnome (1.2) for HP-UX." Another nail in the CDE coffin ;)

Ximian for HP-UX

Comments Filter:
  • I want to know when support for Mdk-8.1 will be forthcoming... I can't believe its that terribly different from 8.0.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but besides geeks who aqquire HP-UX machines via ebay and dumpsters, who wouls use ximian gnome. Perhaps its imply becasue I've never even seen an HP-UX in my life, but I would assume that Solaris/Sun is the defacto standard for commercial unix desktops.
    • Answer. This just helps HP-UX system administrators goof off. :-) I actually like the HPUX Visualize workstations, they kick ass as far as the hardware is concerned. I roast comparable ultra5 workstations on a regular basis, running benchmarks on the code I'm fiddling with. Hell yeah, I wouldn't mind one of those running GNU tools instead of a puny x86 linux box. In fact, I used to work at HP and a couple days before I left I saw a guy in the lab boot an hp9000 using the linux kernel to bash. It was pretty neat. Though I'm not sure if there are PIX drivers yet to run X.

    • Actually, HP is very widely used in engineering, and that's a very large % of all *NIX boxes in use. CDE is just too comlicated to average users whom in many cases don't even know *NIX. Sure Gnome will be a nice addon for them. I'm downloading it right now, I'll see how they like it :)
  • Back when I had to use those HP-UX machines, CDE offered much more than any free alternative (err... were there any?), but today, I'd really like a modern Gnome (or KDE, which I prefer) on those thingies. It doesn't take anything away, and it will surely put some pressure on CDE - so more power to them!

Thousands of innocent men and women put their heart and souls into the development of CDE, and you people have the gall to make light of it? My *god* people, GET SOME PRIORITIES!

    You people disgust me!
  • Isn't the current version of Ximain Gnome at 1.4? Does this mean that they had problems with Nautilus on HP-UX and just decided to use GMC and call it 1.2? Maybe this helps explain the CDE compatible mode that you can select when running the Ximian setup program for the first time.

  • completely dead environment.. well not yet but thats what it looks like is happening to it.

I'm kinda glad, as UNIX needs a new face. It is interesting that Ximian / Gnome is the one that it is getting rather than kde. Both HP and Sun are kinda backing gnome. Interesting though

    • I use CDE, and I happen to like it. I think it'd be great to see it open-sourced and available on Linux as an alternative, lightweight, integrated WM.

I'll stop now so that everybody can finish laughing at me :(

      • you obviously missed the "well not yet part of the comment".. the point it that cde is on its way out. if you want a free version of a WM like that on Linux try xfce.

Ximian also launched their Red Carpet Express service today-- it's a high-bandwidth paid-subscription deal where you pay like 10 bucks a month and get faster downloads. I'm totally down with ponying up a little cash to be able to max out my cablemodem.

Both the HP-UX release, and the Red Carpet Express launch are good news for Ximian in terms of real dollars rolling in.

I'm pretty excited about the Express thing-- it's a good opportunity to support a company that does great stuff for the community.
  • Anyone know of any plans to get ximian on FreeBSD or any other BSDs?

It is better to travel hopefully than to fly Continental.

Working...
