bsd writes: "Rubi Con is invading Detroit, MI again. This year it is April 5-7th. Rubi Con is a yearly technology conference with a focus on data and network security. This is Rubi Con's 4th year in existance. With over 60 speakers it will be 72 hours of fun. Maybe we will see some of the Slashdot Mob there? More information at Rubi Con's Website."

Since ./ is just flooding their server, here is a description.

Rubi Con is about knowledge. It is about opening doors and it is about understanding your world, the world of technology, in new ways. Rubi Con is a yearly technology conference with a focus on data and network security. We celebrate the duality between IT professionals --those who keep people out-- and the underground computer "hackers" --those who try to get in. To us, they are two sides of the same coin. We believe that by bringing them together, each can learn an amazing amount. Our goal is to teach --through a variety of expert speakers, panels, workshops, games, and other means-- and to foster an environment where people aren't afraid to ask --and learn-- from their neighbors.

Yes, they are 100% buzzword compliant. Now what is the conference good for?

  • "We went to Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor was closed. We went to Chicago, Chicago was broken." (And in old Chitown, we also got a flat tire on the Loop during rush hour when we hit a pothole hard enough to jar everyone's back teeth.) Having spent a week and a half in the downtownish area of Detroit, I can safely say that apart from the beautiful old churches nothing could draw me back there. Paranoia? Hardly -- just common sense.
    • The Detroit Metro hotel Rubicon is at this year is actually not very close to downtown Detroit at all. The airport is about 20-30 minutes from the "real" downtown, and about 30-40 minutes from Ann Arbor, which is the anti-Detroit (or, as is written on the city maps "5 square miles surrounded by reality"). So if you want the real Detroit, you can get there, and if you want to avoid it, stay in Ann Arbor, and drive 30 minutes a day.

Don't let the city of Detroit (most murders in 2001!!!, up 1 from 2000, to just over 1.33 per day) scare you away from Rubi, you won't be anywhere near it.

OTOH, perhaps Rubi doesn't want any fraidy-cats around or they'd move it to Ann Arbor or Southfield or somewhere a little less frightening to those who watch the news.

... and the churches and other buildings really are beautiful if you get down there in the day - bring a camera, there are some amazing sights (both beautiful and ugly).

    • Ha! Wimp.

Please, I've lived in Detroit all my life. Never been shot (or shot at)... and I go into the Cass Corridor 3-4 times a month on the weekends (only 2 decent clubs in the Metro area are there).

Come to Detroit... we won't hurt you, really. (ha ha ha ha ha)

But seriously... Detroit itself isn't all that, but we do have casinos downtown, and Windsor is just a hop across the border (post 9/11, it takes a *little* longer to make the crossing, but still 15 minutes most times at the border). Ann Arbor is maybe 20 minutes from the hotel, and Dearborn is maybe 15 minutes tops. *I* think it's still a fun town!

I have gone every year since 1999. It seems to get better and better with age.
  • Yeah, but it's not in a ghetto hotel this year! Nothing beats roof access that nobody gives a shit about. Watching the drizzle fall on the city from up there was a hell of a way to relax in the middle of a stressful con.

I don't think the Marriott will be so amused. On the other hand, there's a Starbuck's within easy range for any clever wireless user.
