FOSDEM Meeting in Brussels This Weekend 68

Anonymous Coward writes "One of the most popular Free and Open Source events in Europe takes place this week-end in Brussels. The Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting, entirely organised by volunteers the event has, in three editions, gained much attention from developers. This is a really technical, non-commercial event organised by the Free & Open Source Software community for the community. Take a look at the FOSDEM website, and take a look at the impressive schedule."

There are even "secret meeting" pages for developers of free software groups that don't want to follow the regular scheduled talks. http://wiki.ael.be/index.php/FosdemUnofficialTalks 2003 [wiki.ael.be]

The mozilla developers will have a get together: http://eu.mozdev.org/Brussels2003/schedule.html [mozdev.org]

And here is the schedule for the PostgreSQL talks http://candle.pha.pa.us/fosdem/ [pha.pa.us]

The best one is at maalbeek metro station, if you are coming from FOSDEM turn right after you get off the train, the club is in the actual station. There is no entrance fee and you pay a modest mark up on the drinks for the entertainment.
There is another one near the stock exchange (metro stations bourse or de brouckere) which is a lot sleazier but if you don't mind being constantly hasseled you can get a lot more there than a lap dance.

Barstards, if i'd have known I'd get mod points out of it I wouldn't have posted AC.

PT 2 There are lots of bars in brussels where the ex pat community hang out, these are located either around shuman (metro stations shuman or maalbeek) or the stock exchange (metro stations bourse or de brouckere)

Round schuman you have The wild geese, kitty o'sheas and the hairy canary among others. You can make a little pub crawl out of it. Coming from FOSDEM by metro, get of at maalbeek and turn left, as you leave the station turn left (downhill) you will spot the Wild Geese on the corner. After you have finished there, cross the dual carriageway outside the pub and head up the hill. You will pass a number of restaurants (the indian is fairly good) as well as kitty o'sheas on your right. There is also a decent sushi place there, beware it closes early (2100 i think) and sells out frequently. When you reach the top of the hill turn left for the Hairy Canary one of the cheaper pubs in the area.

Around the stock exchange: get of a de brouckere and head for the exit called "anspach". Lots of bars and restaurants round here. Including O'reilly's which you should be able to see as you exit the metro. Another one in the area to check out is Loplops (just up the road from the sleazy strip club I mentioned earlier) a bit dingy but loads of different belgian beers

You could have brought this just a little earlier, you know.

I was reminded of FOSDEM yesterday by the advertisements (there are envough of them, and I believe even here on /.), and I made plans to go over the weekend, in between two other things I have to do. Figured out I'd write down the train information, etc. tonight.

Nice thing to slashdot the website on the last minute. I think you've served a lot of people by doing that.
  • Too bad I can't go to Brussels... =(

Any chance that they'll post transcripts of the speeches on their web site?
  • If you look at submitter's email, it's pr@fosdem.org . I think anything that supports open source is worthwhile, but wouldn't articles have more validity if posted by an unconnected thrid party?

At least this isn't as blatant as "I just published an article at [you name it]".

  • can I get somewhere to stay thats fairly cheap ?

all that the website recomend are not very.... VISA/last minute friendly

    any thought would be great

  • Most of the talks at fosdem this year lack originality and all sound familiar to the talks that have been held at both previous fosdems. So, I'm not going back this year. Sorry.

I'm thinking of going for the sunday morning security talks, but they're in "Conference Room 1" which kinda implies (to me) that it's for actual developers only.. I'm just a fan of security :)

As opposed to the "open sessions" which would imply they're open- anyone can go. I'm an unemployed CS grad who can't code in C so the developer aspect isn't what I'm really interested in, if it's all talk about code etc.

    Can anyone clarify? Thanks.

I was at Fosdem 2002 last year, and there were a lot more people than they expected, so it was a bit of a mess.

This year they anticipate the crowd more precisely and they can handle more folks. Also this year there will me more a focus on users in stead of developers. This means tutorials and more explenation.

Offcourse Richard Stallman will be there, if you CAN please go, a Stallman speech is really worth it.

I am a lucky bastard, Stallman gave an exclusive speech about Free Software at our school today (Friday). I'm really honored that my school managed to invite him. (I got a bunch of GNU stickers for free ;))

I hope they will also raise the issue of EU software patent directive. It's time to convince EU representatives. Don't let lawyer groups dominate our sw-patent debate.

  • Brussels may not be the warmest place right now but the people are great, the food is good, the beer excellent. I've been back in the States now for almost 10 months and have had the op. to visit some OS conferences/meetings but none have really compared with similar meetings I attended in Vienna or Paris... wistful Yank for the Olde Worlde Digital Ways. If you're in Europe, I'd say GO!
