Discord is Axing its Nitro Games Catalog Since Almost Nobody Plays Them (neowin.net) 17

Almost a year ago, Discord launched its own games store and overhauled the Nitro subscription service to offer access to a library of games in addition to other chat and server related perks. From a report: The app's store has gone through several changes over the year, with games ultimately being sold directly through developers' Discord servers instead of the original dedicated portal. However, the library of games Nitro subscribers get access to is getting axed, and its because almost nobody actually played them, per Discord. "We learned a lot from all of you over the last year. Through your valuable feedback, it became clear that while we and some of you love these games, the truth is the vast majority of Nitro subscribers didn't play them," said the company in a blog post today.

"So, after careful consideration, we won't be hitting Continue when these contracts come up for renewal. The removal affects users who are registered for the $9.99 per month (or the $99.99 annual) Nitro subscription, who will no longer be able to play the almost 100-strong catalog of games -- seen on the left image -- from October 15, 2019. To those who may have been caught off guard by the announcement and want to cancel Nitro, Discord is also offering refunds on the subscription.

  • If the executives at the company were real gamers they'd have not made this utterly basic mistake. They were way, way, WAY too late to the game.

Perhaps Discord's investors/shareholders should fire the CEO and put someone that knows games into their place.

Maybe if you haven't heard of a service with 50+ million monthly active users [gamesindustry.biz] catering primarily to gamers it's you. It's a bit like explaining who YouTube is in the video streaming market...

      • It's heavily mentioned on Patreon and Twitch, but I've never heard Discord talked about anywhere else.

Yeah, no. I don't Facebook. I don't snapchat. I don't see the point to streaming video games, nor watching others play. I have as little social media footprint as I can manage.

I do track game reviews. When I'm done with a game and need another I check those reviews to see what I might want to play next.

    • lol, never heard of Discord? Congratulations, grandpa.

From one grandpa to another :D
      • Discord is IRC re-invented for a bunch of millennials who don't know any better. And as for those who mention how Discord archives discussion so you can look back after being away....well that sort of discussion would be better served on a message board a la vbulletin or phpbb.

Heck a lot of these gamer-centric Discord's would be better served with something like the old Ning from before Ning went all business focus.

well disccord has a few things irc does not have at all/by default: voice chat(you can't always take your hands off the keyboard to reply to text), scroll back history that does not deissaper if your client dies and attachments (nice to have everything in one place). Does all this need to be integrated in one platform, not really, but gamers find it convenient, and with its integrations to Twitch it makes it super convinient for streamers to have thither communities there since evrything is automated, som
    • i am a gamer on discord and had no idea they had a game store. but i could have told them the idea was stupid had they asked me prior.

DISCORD (def: disagreement between people) is a REALLY great game. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.

Some people just finished a their 3rd campaign the other night on Thursday, Sept. 12. Others are starting a different campaign mid-next year in August 2020. Each one is a Battle-Royale fight with only a single winner, but afterwards each winner picks a familiar for additional help. And later on, the two winners and familiars fight between themselves to crown the ultimate champion team, only to do

    • Really? Because just about every online gaming community (and even a lot of other communities) has their own Discord now. There's a Discord community for pretty much every guild, class, individual server, and activity in World of Warcraft, for example; my WoW folder alone (they added server folders as an optional feature recently) has probably 10-15 different servers. For emulation, just about every major actively developed project has a Discord. For romhacks, most of the really significant ongoing ones hav

  • I am glad they were willing to try to branch out. That's what you do when you're successful. I'm also glad they realized it wasn't working out and they are cutting the strings. Keeping focused on what you're good at is always a good idea.
